
Development of innovative global ground-to-air solutions for the safety of very low-altitude drone operations
PROJECT DESCRIPTION AND OBJECTIVES
The GAViOTA project aims to define a specific operations concept for RPAS for specific and certified applications with safe operating criteria, through the development of a navigation sensor (based on the EGNOS GNSS augmentation system) and surveillance sensor (based on ADS-B and IoT NB (4G) technology) that can be integrated into an RPAS platform. This sensor will not only offer new navigation and operation monitoring functionalities for the RPAS, thus enabling safe and innovative operations, but also aims to contribute to the RPAS meeting the requirements necessary for its future integration into non-segregated airspace.
In concrete terms, the GAViOTA project aims at 5 main objectives:
1.- Develop a concept of operations, supported by a safety study, to obtain operational approval, considering national regulations and the European roadmap for the integration of RPAS into airspace.
2.- Develop and integrate an EGNOS-based navigation sensor into an RPAS.
3.- Develop a ground-based network for the detection of non-cooperative aircraft that could affect the operation of the RPAS.
4.- Develop a “Detect and Avoid” operator position.
5.- Carry out a flight campaign to validate navigation and surveillance functions.
