Summary

The MADISON group is presented as a consortium of excellence composed of four research centers of the Cervera Network, leaders in Spain in the technological area of Additive Manufacturing (hereinafter FA): AIDIMME, CEIT, LORTEK and CATEC. This grouping is based on a previous participation framework (CEFAM – Cervera Network of 2019 of CDTI) that has strengthened trust among the participating centers. They are considered to have proven experience and ambition to address excellence in AM, including the development of specific equipment, processes, and materials for its implementation as a production process on an industrial scale.

The overall objective of the MADISON cluster is to address various research challenges posed by AM technologies when applied to metallic materials. Furthermore, the program seeks to increase the impact of excellent training on the staff of participating centers, as well as attract talent and enhance the reach of the results to both the scientific community and businesses.

At a technical level, the group proposes (1) to develop the raw material of 5 different types of metallic materials through powder simulation and manufacturing and raw material additivation, (2) to make incremental improvements on the AM technologies to process the developed raw material, (3) to analyze and propose improvements in the processability of the material based on different process conditions, in the post-processes and in the physicochemical characterization methods of the manufactured parts, (4) to design prediction methodologies and develop digital models of the processes to reduce the time and resources allocated to obtaining the optimal manufacturing conditions, (5) to develop non-destructive inspection methodologies and technologies applicable to new materials, and (6) to analyze the sustainability of the new, or improved, AM processes in terms of processability, material functionality, consumption, energy efficiency, emissions throughout the life cycle, as well as the recyclability of the materials.

CATEC’s role at MADISON focuses on PBF-LB/M and DED-LB/M + hybrid technologies, manufacturing process simulation, FAM-oriented design and process monitoring, surface finish improvement, and new non-destructive testing (NDT) methods and procedures. In addition, it participates in training and talent attraction programs, as well as in actions to transfer and disseminate results.
