Development of remote sensing technologies through the use of LIDAR sensors on-board UAVs for their use in precision agriculture


The project UAV-LIDETECT proposes the use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for advanced remote sensing applications for Precision Agriculture, using LIDAR sensors (laserscanners which provide range measurements). Precision Agriculture applications range from real-time surveillance, in order to detect nutrient deficit, to chemical agent minimization and mitigation of water stress. The main goal of the project UAV-LIDETECT is the development of technologies that allow in short or medium term the affordable application of remote sensing in precision agriculture using UAVs.



The main objectives of the project are the following:

• Development of new methodologies that allow the automatic creation of 3D maps from the data obtained by a LIDAR sensor on-board UAVs.

 • Development of software tools that reduce the necessary time for service delivery, that is, the necessary time between the service contract and the delivery of results.

 • Development of operational concepts to allow the legal provision of services, due to the fact that one of the main obstacles for the effective integration of UAVs in civil applications is related to legal matters.

 • Adaptation of the aerial platform UAV in order to fulfil the application requirements: integration of different sensors and necessary computational capacity in a specific autonomous system, minimizing the energy consumption and total weight.

 • Perform field demonstrations, carrying out several experiments in order to obtain information about the application characteristics and possible improvements.

A sample map generated with the software tools developed in the project is shown below. In order to generate such map, onboard LIDAR sensor measurements have been combined with the UAV position and attitude information.
